Divination and Ritual with Flowers

As witches, we are called to connect with the natural world around us, to honor the cycles of the seasons, and to work with the elemental forces of earth, air, fire, and water. And one of the most potent and enchanting ways we can do this is through flower magick.

Flowers have been revered and used in magickal practices for centuries, and for good reason. These delicate beings hold within them a deep wisdom and a potent energy that can help us to connect with our own intuition and power, to heal and transform our lives, and to deepen our relationship with the divine.

At the heart of flower magick is the idea of rewinding ourselves, of slowing down and connecting with the natural world around us. In our fast-paced, modern lives, it can be all too easy to lose touch with the rhythms of nature, to forget that we are a part of something greater than ourselves. But by taking the time to connect with the wild spirits of flowers, we can begin to remember our own wildness, our own connection to the earth, and our own power as witches.

Divination and ritual using flowers is a powerful and ancient practice that has been used for centuries by many cultures and spiritual traditions. This technique involves using the language of plants to gain insight, guidance, and wisdom for various aspects of life.

The practice of flower divination is rooted in the belief that plants have a unique energy and consciousness that can be accessed and communicated with. Each flower has its own unique properties, meanings, and symbolism that can be used to gain insight and understanding.

Oracle Cards

One way to practice flower divination is through the use of a flower oracle. This can be a deck of cards or a set of flowers that have been chosen for their specific meanings and symbolism. You can then use these cards or flowers to draw a reading or ask a specific question.

Soulflower Plant Spirit Oracle

In this high-vibration, full-color deck, artist and plant whisperer Lisa Estabrook presents 44 beautiful and vivid Soulflower oracle cards, along with empowering and insightful messages from each card’s plant spirit, to help you tend the garden of your soul. The cards are designed to help you remember the simple truth that all of Nature is sharing--that we are cyclical beings intimately entwined with the Earth and all of life. Working with the cards will help you connect directly to your own inner wisdom, your intuition, like a mirror reflecting back at you the truth of what’s in your heart. For example, Chamomile reflects the soul quality of stability and its plant spirit reveals how, even on a cloudy day, the sun is still shining--it is just obscured. For Bleeding Heart, the soul quality is independence and its plant spirit helps you to recognize and strengthen the true source of your heart’s power.

Fresh Flower Meditation

Create a bouquet of flowers and herbs that are specific to your question or intention, and then take the time to meditate on the bouquet, taking note of any impressions or messages that come to you.

  • Obtain a fresh flower bouquet, preferably with a variety of scents and colors. I like to build one using whatever is in bloom in the yard at the time. Choose a quiet, peaceful space where you will not be disturbed. Sit comfortably and place the bouquet close, in front of you.

  • Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, focusing on the sensation of the breath entering and leaving your body. Begin to take notice of the scent of the flowers, focusing on the different scents and which ones stand out to you.

  • Open your eyes and take a few moments to appreciate the visual beauty of the bouquet. Observe the colors, shapes, and arrangements of the flowers. As you gaze at the bouquet, allow your mind to relax and become still. Try to let go of any thoughts or worries that may be occupying your mind.

  • Gently touch each flower and take a few deep breaths, focusing on the sensations of the flowers against your skin.

  • Continue to focus on the scent and visual beauty of the flowers for several minutes, allowing your mind to become more peaceful and centered. When you are ready, slowly open your eyes, take a few deep breaths, proceed with your planned rituals, spell work, or return to your daily activities, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Spellwork

Flower divination can also be incorporated into rituals and ceremonies. You can use specific flowers in your altar or spellwork to enhance their energy and symbolism. For example, using marigold in a ritual for abundance or rose in a ritual for love. Flower divination can be a powerful tool in spell work. Here are some ways to use flower divination in spell work:

  • Select specific types of flowers that correspond with your intention, such as roses for love spells or chamomile for calming spells.

  • Arrange the flowers in a specific pattern or shape, such as a spiral or a circle, to represent your intention and focus your energy.

  • Use the flowers as a divination tool by interpreting their appearance, placement, and arrangement, and use this information to guide your spell work.

  • Write affirmations or positive statements related to your intention on small pieces of paper and place them among the flowers. Repeat these affirmations as you perform your spell work.

  • Place flowers as offerings during spell work to honor the elements, nature spirits, deities, or other spiritual beings you are working with.

By incorporating flower divination into your spell work, you can tap into the natural energy and symbolism of flowers, enhance your intention, and deepen your connection with the natural world.

Self-Care Rituals

Flowers can also be used for healing and self-care. Certain flowers have medicinal properties and can be used in teas, oils, and other remedies. For example, chamomile is known for its calming properties and lavender is known for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety.

Here are some ideas for self care rituals and divination using fresh flowers:

  • Add fresh flowers such as lavender, rose, or chamomile to your bath water for a relaxing and rejuvenating aromatherapy experience.

  • Spread petals from different types of flowers on a flat surface, then use them for divination by interpreting the shapes and arrangements of the petals.

  • Write affirmations or positive statements on small pieces of paper and place them inside a vase filled with fresh flowers. Repeat your affirmations each time you look at the flowers.

  • Place a bouquet of fresh flowers in front of you and focus on their colors, scents, and textures. Use this as a focal point for a guided meditation or visualization practice.

  • Create a flower essence by placing fresh flowers in a jar of water, then leaving it in the sun for several hours. Use the flower essence as a skin toner, in a bath, or as a spray to enhance your mood or reduce stress.

Flower divination can be a powerful tool for gaining insight and guidance in your life. It is a simple, yet effective way to connect with the natural world and access the wisdom and energy of the plants. By learning the language of flowers, you can deepen your connection with nature and tap into the powerful magic that lies within it.

Some specific flowers and their correspondences include:

  • Lavender: relaxation, peace, sleep

  • Rose: love, passion, beauty

  • Sunflower: confidence, happiness, success

  • Dandelion: divination, wishes, psychic powers

  • Jasmine: divination, love, prosperity

  • Lotus: spiritual growth, enlightenment, purity

As we work with flower magick, let us remember to honor the spirits of these wild beings and to cultivate a deep reverence for the natural world around us. May we find joy, wonder, and empowerment in the potent medicine of these sacred flowers, and may we be reminded of our own wildness and connection to the earth. Blessed be.
