The more you use your tarot deck, the better and more clearly it will communicate with you. When I first buy a deck for personal use, I spend a great deal of time with it. I shuffle the cards each morning, set them in my lap while I journal, meditate, or just drink my tea. I spend time studying the imagery and details of the cards. When I am done with my cards for the day I put them in a dedicated space, bag, or box and thank them for their guidance and beauty. Consider using a lovely sentimental item, suck as a scarf or luxurious piece of cloth to wrap your cards. I also like to place mine with a piece of clear quartz atop them so they are always charged.
Welcome Ritual
Upon first acquiring your tarot deck, find a peaceful place where you can linger over your cards for an hour. Light a candle, relax in nature or on your back patio, enjoy a cup of tea. Place yourself in an open and relaxed state of mind to welcome your new deck of cards.
When you are ready, open your deck and spend a few minutes just holding the deck between your palms. Next spend some time looking at every card. Once you have looked at every card, give your deck a good shuffle.
Fan the cards out in front of you and gently run your fingers over the exposed cards.
Close your eyes and take your time before drawing one card. Allow your intuition to guide the selection of this first card. I usually feel a slight tingle or a warming of the finger tips above the card I choose. Your sensations may be different, and it pays to put in the time really observing the sensations around your cards before selecting one.
Study the card you have drawn, noticing all the details. What do you feel this card might represent for you? How does it make you feel as you hold the card and examine it? Make notes of what card you drew and any thoughts, observations, and emotions that come up. You may even want to free-write for a few minutes after examining the card.
When you are done, gather up the remaining cards, placing the card you drew face up on the deck.
Carefully wrap or store the cards, thanking them and welcoming them into your magical practice.
The next day, shuffle the top card into the deck and repeat the process outlined above.
Repeat this ritual daily if possible, for one week to one month. Some witches will even make this a daily practice up to a year before using their deck for divination. You will know when the time is right to bring the deck into your magical practice. Trust your intuition.
