Upgrade Your Witchy Front Door

As modern witches, we often focus on creating sacred spaces within our homes to promote positive energy and protect ourselves from negative influences. One area of our homes that is often overlooked, but plays a crucial role in setting the tone for our entire living space, is the front door. The front door is the first thing people see when they come to visit and it is also the first line of defense against negative energy. I want to explore with you the many ways to bless and ward our front doors, decorate our entrances, and use colors, plants, chimes, and light to create a magical and inviting space as people enter our homes.

Blessing the front door

Blessing and warding the front door is an important step in creating a sacred and protected space. A simple way to do this is by creating a blessing poem or ritual. Here is what I used recently on my own front door when I had completed cleaning and repainting it.

"Bless this door, and all who enter here

May love and light and peace be near

May joy and laughter fill the air

And may all who enter leave with care"

You can recite this poem every time you enter or leave your home, or you can create your own unique blessing. You can also include a ritual, such as lighting a candle or burning some incense to help set the mood as you perform your blessing ritual.

Witchy decorating ideas

Color

Decorating your entrance and front door as a modern witch can be a fun and creative way to infuse your space with magic. One way to do this is by using colors that correspond to the elements and the intentions you want to set for your space.

Here are some popular colors for front doors and their metaphysical and magical meaning:

  • Red is a bold and powerful color, often associated with energy, passion, and strength. It is believed to attract prosperity and good luck, and to protect the home from negative energies.

  • Blue is a calming and soothing color, often associated with trust, communication, and stability. It is believed to attract peace and tranquility to the home, and to promote communication and understanding.

  • Yellow is a bright and cheerful color, often associated with optimism, inspiration, and happiness. It is believed to attract happiness and positivity to the home, and to promote creativity and inspiration.

  • Green is a refreshing and grounding color, often associated with growth, renewal, and nature. It is believed to attract abundance and prosperity to the home, and to promote growth and renewal.

  • Purple is a regal and mysterious color, often associated with spirituality, intuition, and creativity. It is believed to attract spiritual growth and wisdom to the home, and to promote intuition and creativity.

These are just a few examples of the meanings associated with different colors for front doors. It is important to choose a color that resonates with you and your home, and to create a space that feels welcoming and harmonious.

I painted my front door pale pink, which is often associated with love, gentleness, and compassion. I wanted to promote feelings of peace, happiness, and nurturing, and to attract love and affection into our lives.

Plants

Adding plants by the front door is a great way to decorate and promote positive energy. I planted a small Meyer Lemon. The lemon tree is seen by many as a symbol of prosperity, abundance, and good luck. It is believed to bring good fortune into one's life, and to attract abundance and success. The sour and astringent properties of lemons are believed to purify negative energies and protect the home and its inhabitants from negativity.

Here are some ideas of popular plants for containers by front doors and their magical meanings:

  • Lavender is known for its calming and relaxing properties, and is often associated with protection, love, and purification.

  • Rosemary is associated with purification, clarity, and mental clarity.

  • Basil is associated with love, abundance, prosperity, and protection.

  • Sage is associated with purification, protection, clarity, and wisdom.

  • Thyme is associated with courage, protection, and vitality.

These are just a few examples of the magical meanings associated with different plants for containers by front doors. It is important to choose plants that resonate with you and your vision for your home.

Chimes and witches bells

Chimes and wind chimes are also a great way to decorate your front door and promote positive energy. Witch's bells for the front door are small bells often hung outside of a home as a form of protection or decoration. In some witchcraft traditions, the ringing of the bell is believed to ward off negative energies and entities, and to announce the presence of positive spirits. The bell may also symbolize hospitality and the invitation for friends, guests, and helpful spirits to enter the home.

Light

Light is an important aspect of decorating your front door. Make sure the area is well lit at night, especially to welcome guests or family members home. You can use candles, lanterns, or even solar lights to create a warm and inviting space.

Crystals

Crystals bring balance and harmony to a space. For modern witches, incorporating crystals around the front door is a simple way to enhance the energy of their home and create a protective barrier.

  • Black Tourmaline is a popular crystal for its grounding and protective properties. It is said to neutralize negative energy and keep the home and its inhabitants safe.

  • Citrine is another crystal known for its abundance-attracting properties, helping to manifest wealth and good fortune.

  • Amethyst is a purifying crystal, believed to cleanse the energy of a space and promote spiritual growth.

  • Clear Quartz is a versatile crystal, often used to amplify the energy of other crystals, and to bring clarity and focus to a space.

  • Tiger's Eye is a grounding crystal, believed to bring protection and stability to a space.

  • Red Jasper keeps the home and its inhabitants safe from harm.

  • Carnelian is a crystal that promotes courage and protects against negativity.

  • Aventurine is a crystal associated with good luck and prosperity, believed to attract abundance and positivity.

  • Fluorite is a crystal that brings clarity and protection, helping to keep the energy of a space balanced and harmonious.

Incorporating crystals around the front door is a simple and effective way to enhance the energy of a home. Try placing a small crystal on the trim above the front door, in a planter at your entrance, or even in the door itself. This is what I did. I removed the old, unused mail slot and closed up each side with a piece of wood painted too match the door. But before closing up the space I placed a few special crystals, a bundle of dried sage, and a scroll with my home blessing written upon it and tied with a happy, yellow ribbon.

Finally, look for opportunities to add personality and character to your home’s entrance. Maybe you can’t paint the door, but surely you can hang some witches bells, or a lovely seasonal wreath.

One final thing I added to my door and sidelight glass was the most gorgeous static cling contact film. When the Western sun comes through the windows, my entire interior is filled with light and rainbows. The film is private enough that no one can see in, but the light still comes flooding through. It fills me with joy every afternoon!

What will you add to your front door to make it uniquely yours?

In conclusion, blessing and warding our front doors and decorating our entrances as modern witches, and using colors, plants, chimes, and light to create a magical and inviting space can help to promote positive energy and protect ourselves from negative influences. By setting the intention for our space and infusing it with magic, we can create a sacred and protected space that welcomes both ourselves and our guests.
